7 simple tips for staying healthy in the office

March 25, 2019

Having a routine is great, but sitting at a desk for hours at a time is not. If you spend a chunk of your day staring at a computer screen, it’s important to remember that your physical well-being is just as important as your work! Here are some simple tips for integrating healthy habits into your office life:

BYOF (Bring Your Own Food)

One of the best ways to start being healthier at work is to bring your own food. If you tend to eat at restaurants or order out for lunch or dinner, try to pack your own meals so they include a healthy balance of protein, fiber, and carbs. This will help you to avoid food with excessive sugar or salt. If you eat well, you will feel less hungry later.

Cut out “bad” snacks

Limit your sugar and salt intake by saying “no” to unhealthy snacks. Feeling peckish? Pack yourself some nuts, which are a great source of protein and healthy fat, to stop yourself from buying unhealthy snacks or filling up on empty calories.

Get enough rest

Rest is vital to productivity and we all know how difficult it can be to operate on little sleep. Make sure you get enough rest each night so you can maintain a healthy immune system and prevent injuries. Try some meditation at night to help you relax and unwind, put your phone away earlier, and sleep at the same time each night to build consistency.

Take a break

If you’re sitting for most of the day, it’s crucial to remember to move. Set alarms to remind yourself to take a break . Go for a short walk or get up to stretch your legs, back and arms. Short breaks encourage circulation and can actually help to boost your productivity and wake you up when you are feeling sluggish.

Maintain good posture

Be mindful of your posture especially if you are staring at a screen for a fixed period of time. Proper posture will help you to avoid muscle soreness and strains. Change your posture every 1-2 hours to ensure your muscles and joints are staying flexible.

Stay hydrated

While coffee can be a much-needed beverage for keeping us alert and functioning, it can also quickly dehydrate. Don’t underestimate the importance of staying hydrated, and remember to drink enough water each day. Snack on fruits that are also good sources of water such as watermelon, apples, grapes or oranges.

Don’t forget to make time for fitness

If you can stay active at work through short breaks, keep hydrated by drinking enough water, and get enough rest each night, you’ll be in great shape! Fitness is also an important component for a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Do a quick, intensive workout in the morning, at lunch or in the evening to get your heart rate up and your mind refreshed.
